The world premiere of the first EVER all female 17-piece big band in Reno, northern Nevada, created, directed and conducted by music educator Nichole Heglund and showcases the talents of 7 decades of local female musicians, from teens to seniors, performing works by all female arrangers and composers and featuring guest sax soloist and educator Anisha Rush for the Reno Jazz Orchestra’s annual “Jazz in the Schools” event created as an educational opportunity for middle school and high school jazz band directors to showcase their school jazz bands for judging, mentoring and community support.

Music From Quarantine Concerts?

These concerts were streamed, performed and recorded LIVE on Facebook featuring the Erika Paul and David Aller Duo with Erika on piano and vocals and David on acoustic and electric basses during the most serious lockdown times of Covid between April and December 2020. This dynamic duo, dedicated to each other and to the artistry of their music, played original and standard straight ahead jazz for viewers worldwide who sheltered in place due to the Covid pandemic.

The original idea was thought up by local jazz musicians and KNCJ 89.5 FM jazz radio personalities Dallas Smith and Scot Marshall who invited numerous local musicians to participate and Erika answered the invite. Additional participants included the Dallas Smith/Susan Mazer group and representative groups of the FTLOJ and RJO organizations. The KNCJ 89.5 FM jazz radio program in Reno continues it’s jazz broadcast Saturday nights from 6 to 10 pm.

270 1st-6th graders from 9 classes participated in a 12-week Music Mondays unit created by Miss Erika for performance preparation and general study of 160+ years of American Jazz styles represented on her unique and comprehensive children’s music album collection.
