Erika Paul – Jazz Artist & Music Specialist holds an A.A. degree in Music from College of San Mateo (CSM), a B.A. degree in Jazz Performing from San Jose State University (SJSU), is a BMI artist, Harry Fox and MLC publisher, AFM and NMPA member and is that rare career music artist that elegantly balances music performance, teaching, songwriting and recording, finding herself equally comfortable as not only being supportive as a sideman, but also as a bandleader, teacher and self-published independent “indie” recording artist.
Erika enjoys performing locally as well as nationally and internationally, as a soloist and in small combos up to full 17-piece big bands, she’s extremely comfortable reading arranged charts as well as soloing on both piano and vocals, loves teaching private piano, voice and guitar, giving clinics and masterclasses, writing and recording in the prolific way original indie artists often do. All her physical, digital and streaming album work is available online worldwide and everywhere.
Erika’s latest album releases, “Jazz Just For Kids (and the young at heart)” (2022) features 12 interactive originals and 2 popular children’s jazz songs, “Originals Volume 1” (2022) features a compilation of uniquely arranged original instrumental and vocal music written from 1994 through 1999, “Wine, Family & Jazz” (2023) features vocal jazz standards and jazz originals performed with her colleagues and lifetime musician friends in France, “SWAY – A Passion for Latin Jazz” (2023) features a rich collection of latin-influenced jazz standard instrumentals and vocals, “River of Now and Forever” (2023) features tracks from a live performance with some of her favorite colleagues and lifetime musician friends from Reno, Nevada and the Erika Paul and David Aller Duo’s debut album, “Our Christmas Gift to You” (2023) featuring unique duo arrangements of original and classic holiday music including two popular songs in France and the UK. Erika joined forces with her partner in life, love and music, bassist David Aller and lifetime friends Susan Mazer on electro-acoustic harp and her husband Dallas Smith on sax, clarinet & flute to record an instrumental holiday album (that does actually feature Erika’s vocals in surprising places) called “Joy For Our World” (2024) featuring lively covers of some of the most popular holiday music worldwide to date.
During the Covid crisis, Erika recorded 16 LIVE 45-minute facebook concerts and 5 single song features (2019-2020) with her partner in life, love and music David Aller to keep their “chops” and music skills fine tuned and growing when public performances were at a standstill. Erika now keeps very busy with solo, duo, trio, her original 4 to 8-piece Swingin’ JazzKats group that can reach up to a 17-piece big band for casuals and special events. You can also catch Erika on piano and/or vocals with the Jazzettes USA and the Sapphire Jazz Ensemble (SJE) 19-piece all female big band.
Erika’s ongoing concerts include The annual Tahoe Yacht Club Concours D’Elegance Antique Wooden Boat Show (featuring her original “Swingin’ JazzKats” band for the 27th year), The Reno Senior Fest (with her original “Swingin’ JazzKats” band for the 10th year), Jazz & Beyond, Gardnerville Jazz and Art Festivals and the Sierra Nevada Lavender and Honey Festival (with the Jazzettes USA), Erika’s duo at the Wild River Grille, Champagne and Chocolate (Reno), Midtown Spirits Wine & Bites, the Lone Eagle, Osteria Sierra and Cutthroat’s at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe in Incline Village, solo at the Living Room at the Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe at Northstar and for the Sierra Arts ECCS and RHAP concerts and last but not least with the Jazzettes USA for the Reno Philharmonic’s Discover Jazz performances and in the Erika Paul & David Aller Duo for the Pioneer Center Golden Encore Program. Erika and David were also featured in the 8-piece band of the world premiere performance of her original, “Farewell ‘Til Summer” in Las Vegas for the Composers Showcase at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts in June of 2025.
By day, Erika teaches private music lessons (she has completed 6300+ lessons on record with Pacific Mist Music as of June 2024 and the number continues to grow) and organizes Pacific Mist Music school as well as private studio music recitals with her partner David Aller to give studying music students a safe and supportive place to perform and share their work. Erika also gives music lessons in her own private music studio and gives instrumental and vocal jazz clinics and workshops most recently at Truckee Meadows Community College voice class under the direction of accomplished vocalist and coach Tiffanie Story and for the Artown 2024 Discover the Arts series Vocal Improvisation at McKinley Arts & Culture Center in Reno. Erika also gives jazz masterclasses with her partner David on acoustic bass for her private studio jazz students and for music education organizations in Reno and Las Vegas.
